V Read—Burial Rites by Hannah Kent

This week we revisit one of our all time favourite novels—Burial Rites by Hannah Kent. Based on the true story of Agnes Magnusdottir, the last woman to be executed in Iceland in 1829, the book tells the tale of the last few winter months before she meets her death.

The lack of prisons means that Agnes spends her time before meeting the axe at a remote farm guarded by the women of the family. Told through various voices, but most compellingly when told by Agnes, the book is the most exquisite mix of sweeping descriptive narratives and the developing human relationships that inevitably form—together with an agonising building tension as we edge nearer to the inevitable end.

Its both gripping and beautiful. Read it soon because news is that Jennifer Lawrence is starring as Agnes in the film adaptation due for release any time soon…
