Kim Jones Test

Kim is great friend of me and David and there is nothing more incredible than seeing his collections. He is an inspiring figure whose creativity is boundless and his appreciation for art comes to life in everything he touches. Below, my team spoke with him about his latest designs and his fashion ethos. VB

“Joyful, bright, and rich,” says Kim Jones, Dior Men’s artistic director on Miami style. Jones just presented his pre-autumn winter 2020 menswear collection in artful fashion at the Rubell Museum in Miami Beach unofficially kicking of the city’s Art Basel fair. This latest marriage of art and fashion is in Jones’s DNA for Dior, something he and the namesake designer share. “I love art and find it inspiring,” says Jones, “each artist you work with, you learn something new. I think it’s great when people work together and inspire each other.”

And for Jones, art is everywhere including the Shawn Stussy redesigned house logo and bee which debuted this week. It’s this style and quality-first mindset that Jones applies to his collections. “I love to see how people interpret our designs,” says Jones whose offerings have proved popular with women including Bella Hadid, Kate Moss, and Naomi Campbell. “The tailoring speaks to both sexes as it has the timeless elegance of Dior and is inspired from his work in the 1940s and 1950s.”

But for Miami, it was about reflecting the location and glamour from the 1960s. Dior’s flora and fauna were interpreted on bold knits punctuated by festive hats from Stephen Jones, silhouettes were sharp yet directional, and the logo motif came to life on separates and accessories. “We found some great references at the Dior archive,” says Jones of the process. As for his vision for the house, Jones keeps it simple. “Tailored, elegant, and couture.”

What’s the soundtrack to your look right now?

I have the [pre-autumn winter 2020] show soundtrack on loop. It’s mixed by A-Trak and it’s amazing.

I would definitely go into conservation as I do a lot of work for that in my spare time.

Probably a bit of a Warhol—observing and have a specific look.

Do you have a Sunday night ritual? If so, what is it?

Oh! It’s Antiques Roadshow, David Attenborough, or a good documentary and then bed! Always early.
