Night Moves

The start of fall brings the opportunity for a wardrobe refresh. With everyone getting back into the autumnal groove, it’s the perfect time to break down some of the season’s most compelling silhouettes for after dark. And Victoria Beckham has designed a wardrobe of distinctive eveningwear that is simultaneously seductive and modest.

The black palette comes to life through sophisticated touches: twinkling embellishments, floor-skimming hems, intricate lace macramé, and French Chantilly lace. A strapless to-the-knee dress appears demure at first, but a joyous band of sequins reveals themselves between the shoulders. Similarly, a high-neck midi dress seems low-key until a sparkling touch is revealed through a slim front slit.

However, those seeking a touch more drama should look to the body grazing lace macramé top and coordinating skirt. Alluding to skin with a couture-like approach, the pieces celebrate the figure and are a thrilling alternative to barely-there dressing. But those looking to embrace a more-is-more approach for night, the sleeveless halter combines a fitted bodice with a fluid back that nodded to Bianca Jagger a la Studio 54 with minimal elegance.

And for further inspiration, look to the red carpet. This past April saw Killing Eve star Jodie Comer prove the back view is just as important as the front when she stepped out in the strapless midi. And on Wednesday, Laura Carmichael—also known as Lady Edith from Downton Abbey—modernized Edwardian-era fashion in the lingerie midi dress while promoting the upcoming Downton film. Carmichael kept things sleek but amped up the handkerchief hem of her dress with the Jasmin open-toe boot.
